Volunteer FAQ

How old do I have to be to volunteer?
Union Rescue Mission provides volunteer opportunities for individuals of all ages.  Special kitchen assignments are available but limited for children under 12.  Please inform the Volunteer Department ahead of time if there are children in your group.  Groups under age 18 must be accompanied by an adult chaperone (over 21).

Are there evening and weekend volunteer opportunities?
Yes, we have volunteer opportunities available seven days a week, 6am-8pm.

What kinds of things can volunteers do?
We offer a variety of volunteer opportunities:

  • Food Service
  • General Cleaning
  • Office/Administrative
  • Teaching/Tutoring
  • Special Events (Seasonal)

Please check our Volunteer Job Board for currently available jobs.

What kind of volunteer opportunities do you have for groups?
Groups of up to 15 people can help serve a meal in the kitchen.  Larger groups may volunteer for special events.

How do I become a volunteer?
To begin volunteering, you must first attend a Volunteer Orientation, where you'll receive valuable volunteer information and a tour of the Mission.  The Volunteer Orientations are usually held twice a month on Saturdays - contact the Volunteer Office for the next available orientation.

Is there a dress code for volunteering?
Yes, food service volunteers MUST wear closed-toe and closed-heal shoes and long pants (no capris or crops).  Wear clothes you are comfortable in and don't mind getting a little dirty!

Do I need to have any volunteer experience?
No, we take volunteers from all different backgrounds.  No experience is necessary - just a willingness to serve!
